England along with Wales Placed Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

The pool stage draw was conducted by sporting icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England and Wales find themselves placed in an identical pool for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a major pool stage clash in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This pairing mirrors their infamous clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at Twickenham contributed to the English team's shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Draws

The Irish and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a group together, replicating the situation from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland secured a convincing win, with Scotland unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as surprise packages in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups cannot meet holders and top-ranked South Africa before the showpiece match, presuming the Springboks win their own group.

Knockout Implications

If the groups conclude in line with the current global standings, further top favourites like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from both England and Ireland until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will open the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at jump-start the competition.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have been paired with Italy, Georgia and Romania. The French team are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will take on the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and Canada as the tournament grows to twenty-four nations from the 20 who competed in France.

This edition will feature a last-16 stage for the first time in the competition's existence.

Although the winner of Pool F may avoid some of the rugby's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – probably the Italians – in the first knockout round.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
