Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several approach shafts providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey said. "They were part of thousands of British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
