Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to contest particular rulings made by the official, mirroring the system already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
